Holiday guests

Two weeks ago, we opened our home to a couple of guests who had no family to spend Christmas with. They were going to be in need of companionship, in need of comfort, food and care. There was no way I could say no.

I had never met them before so I must admit that I was a little apprehensive at first. I worried about all sorts of things. How comfortable would they feel in our home? What would they want to eat? Would they mind the fact that we have a dog?

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I was probably worrying for nothing. After all, they came with two pages of instructions, a bag of food, two bags of bedding, and a cute little wheel for exercise. And best of all, my son was so excited to have them come home with us!

Apparently a lot of children at school really wanted to take them home for the two-week Christmas break. You see, they live at school.

Here was their car ride to our home...

Meet the gerbils! You can only see one in the picture above but there are two. They are two boys. Brothers maybe?

So far, they have been perfect guests. And so far, yes I have touched them but no, I haven't picked them up. Let's not push it!

The science teacher said that they like to chew up paper towel rolls for fun. Here they are below enjoying their "hobby".

Our dog Lizzy doesn't seem to mind having them around. As a matter of fact, she likes to lay down not too far from them. Maybe to keep an eye on them and make sure they don't get out?!

At 16, she's used to being the only pet in the house you know.

Poor thing suffered a small injury to her paw yesterday and had to go for a trip to the vet. See her little paw all bandaged up? I'm sure she'll be fine in a few days.

I sure hope all of you are enjoying some relaxing and fun holidays with your family and friends. May this new year be filled with sweet blessings and memories to treasure forever.

{hugs}

Oh my! What fun! Having rodent guests for the holidays! And I was so delighted seeing a picture of Lizzy enjoying their presence. I don't know why, but in the last few days, this is at least the 3rd blog I've run across with a Cocker Spaniel! We have 2 and I'm always surprised to find others. So many families now opt for Labs and Goldens, or their designer Labradoodles or Goldendoodles. So it's fun to run across a fellow Cocker-lover! Thanks for sharing. I'll definitely post more pics of my Cockers on my blog soon. Join the trend, y'know.

What a fun thing for a little boy!
Wonder if he'll want some for his own now:) I have to admit, they are fascinating to watch. Even your dog thinks so. Sorry about the little paw accident. Our elderly neighbors have an older Golden Retriever; she let it out yesterday evening not realizing the gate was open. We have a deep snow and it was snowing last night. We joined the searsh driving up and down streets calling and whistling for Sam to no avail. I feel so sad for them. I looked over this morning and the gate is open still. He's still missing. Yes, they've called the pound and the police. I'm thinking someone must have him; surely he'd not go very far. We have to be so careful with our little friends.
God bless your family in the new year.

Melody, how kind of you to be concerned about our neighbors lost dog. They did get him back thanks to a attentive policeman in a neighboring area. A dog matching that description was seen a couple of miles from here the next afternoon. I'm amazed that the news reached them and even more that the dog did. We don't thing 'Old Sammy' made it all the way out there by himself. It seems a very mean trick to play, but since we'll never know the truth about his disappearance, I give God the credit for his recovery. His owners are not believers, but I assured them I was praying and when they brought him home, I reminded them that it was a miracle to find him so far away and it must be the result of prayer. They seemed to believe that was a possibility and thanked us for spending time searching and praying. I sure am glad to see him home. He seemed happy too!

Debbie, I'm so glad Sammy was found! What a relief it must be for your neighbors to get him back, and for Sammy to be home where he belongs. And, yes, I also believe God provides miracles even for those who aren't believers. Sometimes it's things like this that soften people's hearts to hear the voice of the Lord. Hopefully it will be the case for your neighbors.

We got to have little class pets come home with us one weekend when our kids were small. It was fun!

As for Cockers, we had a little black one for many years, and he was the best little dog ever. Our kids sat on him and shared their popsicles with him and anything else they had. We sure missed him when he was gone. We've had other dogs since then, but Butler will always be a favorite!

Oh, joy! Lol! You are such a good sport about the little visitors.

When our fourth grade teacher personally begged me both years for son 1 and son 2 to take the class rat home for the holidays, I could only say...

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Twice. :)

I hope Lizzy is better soon!
