Homemade chocolate truffles

I had a taste for chocolate yesterday afternoon so I decided to get all fancy and make truffles.

Actually, the name is the only thing that's fancy about them. They're very simple to make and require only a few ingredients.

I took the recipe from this children's tea party book that I own:

These would be wonderful served at any tea party but they certainly don't need a special occasion.

If you'd like to make them, all you need to do is mix the following three ingredients in a small (microwave-safe) bowl: 1 cup of milk chocolate chips, 1/2 a stick of butter cut into small pieces, and 1/2 a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Microwave for one minute on high, stir, and microwave another minute. Stir until the mixture is smooth and refrigerate it for at least one hour.

Then, using a teaspoon, make about 12 little balls. Note that you may need to put the bowl or the truffles in the freezer for a few minutes if you find the chocolate getting too soft.

For the coating, mix 5 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa and 5 tablespoons of powdered sugar on a plate. As you'll see below, I'm sure I used more than the few tablespoons called for but that's because I didn't bother to measure. It's just for the coating after all.

Then, gently roll each truffle one by one on the plate until it's coated all around.

Oh, who has time to do this one by one?! Go ahead and throw in a few at a time and let them roll around to get a good coating...

When you're finished, put the truffles in a plastic container and store them in the refrigerator until you're ready to have them. Or, you can forget the storing part altogether and eat them right out of the Tupperware or,

... or put them on a pretty plate and behave! Start with one and stop at two, or three. Four tops.

Hope you enjoy them, and many sweet blessings! :)

P.S. How do YOU satisfy your chocolate cravings?

These do look easy and delicious! I have a truffle recipe, too but it calls for cream cheese and more expensive chocolate. I'll have to try yours soon.

Funny you should ask. Just before I sat down to read blogs I put my chocolate mug cake in the microwave. I blogged about it here: http://vanessacovington.blogspot.com/2008/09/grab-your-favorite-mug.html

How do I satisfy my chocolate cravings? As quickly and as often as possible! :) It's a crime how much I am a lover of the chocolate. Usually, I will make chocolate chip cookies...that way I can sample some of the butter/sugar goodness of the dough before the eggs and vanilla are added.

Great recipe! I'm thinking lovely little Valentine's day teacher and neighbor gifts.

I know I'm in the minority, but chocolate is not a favorite of mine. Now white chocolate is an entirely different thing....LOVE it!!

I do make truffles, both white and regular chocolate. Your recipe is very similar to mine, as I recall.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and taking time to say "hello.". I love this little book. I sent my daughter a copy of it when she was planning a tea party for her 7 year old daughter. Thanks for sharing the details of the truffle-making experience. It always helps to know someone has successfully made a recipe before trying it myself.

My daughter makes brownies that melt in your mouth, but since she lives three hours away...sigh...there's always Dove Dark Chocolate for when my cravings hit. I may try these truffles though. They look easy.

hahahaha I actually almost bought that book. Problem was I don't have small kids anymore but I sure spent some time at Barnes and Nobel looking at it. Sat in the little kids chair hoping no one was looking.......has some great stuff in it. I'll have to re-check it out.

Melody...lately we've been having Ghiradelli brownies when the chocolate cravings start. Although I'm usually a stickler for "from scratch" baking, you can't beat the mix we find at our Costco store. Thanks for finding me at the Home Acre...I'll be stopping by again.

These look wonderful. I think it would be hard to stop with 2 or 3 though. Might be a good idea to have a lot of people around when you make them, to polish them off or send them home with!

OH - how yummy they look. The recipe does seem easy. I think they would be perfect for the holidays.
I like nothing better than a Hershey bar with almonds and a cup of tea to satisfy my chocolate craving - which seems to come far too often!
Have a blessed weekend.

These sound so yummy!! I have always been intimidated by making truffles, but your recipe sounds very easy. I love chocolate, but don't eat it as much as I used to. I will give these a try. My husband would love them. (He really loves chocolate!!!) Thank you for sharing the recipe.

I just wanted to comment on this:
"For the Lord will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody." Isaiah 51:3

That's God working in His daugthers lives. That is what spoke to me when I read this when I first came here tonight...Such a powerful scripture and how greatly it ministered to me, comforting me and confirming to me that God is working right now in my wilderness and desert places of my life.

Thank you so much for your passionate loving heart for Jesus. It just spills right out to me and leaves me blessed. ((hugs))

This recipe is music to this chocolate lovers ears. Now this is the kind of cooking I can do. I bet you could even think of different things to be the coating, too. I love using those recipes that LOOK harder than they actually are!
Thanks for the visit to Gatherings. I am always happy to make new friends! Please come and visit again! Blessings!

Hi Melody,
Thank you for your visit to my blog and sweet comment *smiles*

My husband and I both are huge chocolate fans, each week we toss a couple of bags of dark chocolate squares into the cart, mine are raspberry filled and his are caramel filled. I made some truffles awhile back that were very simple, it seems the simplier the recipe the better the results. Yours look divine! Hope you had a wonderful time sharing them with your little man.

Oh my goodness... your chocolate truffles look delicious, and they are so pretty to look at!
Thank you for stopping by my blog for a visit. I look forward to visiting yours more!

Oh, I almost forgot...I satisfy my chocolate craving by buying a jumbo-sized dark chocolate bar, and breaking a piece off every time I get a craving. I'm looking forward to the Christmas season because I make my mom's chocolate fudge (with nuts...i love nuts).

The problem with my chocolate craving is that it never really IS "satisfied". I can tame it for a moment or two, but it always returns with a vengence! :)

These look delicious and I'm anxious to give them a try. I bet they would look pretty rolled in holiday sprinkles too. (I think they call them "Jimmies" in the baking world.)

Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Mmmmm, these look mighty tasty. And simple, as well. Thanks for sharing :)

I don't have any baker's cocoa in the house. I wonder if I could just roll them in some hot chocolate mix? What do you think?

They look wonderful!

the voice of melody said...

"Raise them up", yes, I would think the hot chocolate mix would be good too. I don't see why not. Also, maybe even just powdered sugar by itself. Or dip them in some melted chocolate if you have some and cool them in the fridge after. There are lots of things you can try. :)

Raise Them Up said...

I'm going to try some for our Homeowner's Association meeting Friday night. Maybe if my husband and I butter the folks up (sorry about the pun) we can convince someone new to take a turn at the directorship for a year!!

Thanks a bunch!

Blessings!
